Cheers Above Empty Bowls

80cm x 80cm

Acrylic on Canvas

Reflects the painful paradox of a world filled with celebration and abundance while millions continue to suffer in silence. Inspired by the reality that more than 1.33 million people globally are currently experiencing active famine, the artwork questions humanity’s collective conscience and the growing divide between privilege and survival.

The contrast between celebration and emptiness symbolizes the inequality that persists across borders. While some raise glasses in joy, others struggle daily for the most basic human necessity: food. The empty bowls become silent witnesses to lives too often ignored beneath the noise of prosperity.

Dominated by shades of blue, the artwork uses water and the ocean as symbols of connection. Oceans flow beyond borders, linking continents, cultures, and humanity itself. The blue tones represent both hope and sorrow — hope for unity and collective action, and sorrow for those left behind.

Through its visual language, Cheers Above Empty Bowls is both a reflection and a call for empathy. It urges viewers to recognize that in a deeply interconnected world, famine is not a distant tragedy but a shared human responsibility.
