Alun Wyn Jones is one of the greatest players in rugby history and the former Wales captain, renowned for his longevity, leadership, and consistency at the very highest level of the game.

He is the most-capped player in the history of rugby union, finishing his international career with a remarkable 170 caps for Wales, and is widely regarded as one of the sport’s all-time greats.

For the British & Irish Lions, Alun Wyn Jones earned a record nine Test caps, more than any other player in the professional era. He featured in every Lions Test from 2009 to 2017, facing all three major southern hemisphere opponents.

His defining Lions moment came in 2013, when he captained the side in the decisive third Test victory over Australia in Sydney, securing the Lions’ first series win in 16 years. Thrust into the captaincy following Sam Warburton’s injury, Jones became the first substitute captain to lead a Lions team in a final Test since 1904, inspiring a dominant 41–16 win.

He toured South Africa in 2009, Australia in 2013, and New Zealand in 2017, starting all three Tests in the drawn series against the All Blacks to complete the full set of Lions opponents.

In 2021, Alun Wyn Jones returned to South Africa once again — this time as Lions captain — completing a remarkable full circle from his first tour 12 years earlier.

At international level, he succeeded Warburton as Wales captain in 2017, leading the side to a Grand Slam in 2019, a Rugby World Cup semi-final the same year, and a Six Nations title in 2021.

Having announced his international retirement in 2023, Alun Wyn Jones brought to a close one of the most storied and influential Test careers the sport has ever seen.
